Project Summary:
Debbie and Steve love their location and had put a lot of work into their home over the years, but they were tired of their cramped closets, and small bedroom and bath. They hired Hurst to create a master suite that would be the ultimate retreat from their busy lives.
Our Challenge:
The new space needed to not only suit their natural and eclectic style, but it had to be “green” eco-friendly, and also address health issues related to air quality, chemical sensitivities and allergies. The new master suite also needed to be spacious including his and her closets for functionality and organization. Containing and/or eliminating of off-gassing of VOC’s and formaldehyde, dust, and other allergens became our goal as well. Many common building products and materials can trigger health problems, so we needed to get creative with our selections and construction methods.
Our Solution:
A seamless addition that blended the old house with the new, created more space in the bathroom, bedroom, and closets. A multi-use and flexible sitting room off of the bedroom with custom made reclaimed barn wood doors which can be closed off or opened to the sleeping area. We used a combination of natural and reclaimed materials in the project. Sliding Glass doors provided natural ventilation, views, and light. Solar tubes and skylights were placed strategically within interior areas (including the hallway and closets) to provide natural light. Plentiful natural lighting to not only save energy, but also to promote health and well being. The doors and windows also provided connection and views to the rear yard which was very important to the clients as they wanted to feel like they were part of the outdoors. To address health concerns we selected Anti-microbial, non-porous, non-toxic, and easy to clean surfaces and a new furnace and good filtration for this area to help with air quality.
The Results:
The master suite remodel is beautiful and tranquil, filled with natural light and unique finishes. The shower and tub are accented with river rock tile and the cabinetry was custom made from reclaimed barn wood. Every detail was a reflection of nature from the drawer pulls to the decorative touches – some created from the clients’ own yard. The project was selected for a NARI Contractor of the Year Award and is in consideration for regional and national awards.
