The Hurst Design-Build Process
When selecting a home remodeling company, most people give a lot of thought to the results they want to achieve, but don’t give much thought to the remodeling process. The very best remodelers with the most satisfied clients know that it is the process that ensures a project’s success.
While making a major change to your home is exciting and rewarding, it can also seem overwhelming. That’s why Hurst Design Build Remodel has created a unique process to guide each project from idea to reality—ensuring clear communication, timeliness, organization, and exceptional quality.
A well-thought-out and executed process can act as a guardrail to keep a home remodeling project on track. A good process provides clients with the information they need so they know what to expect every step of the way and it gives the remodeler a clear understanding of the client’s expectations.
Hurst Design Build Remodel has been perfecting its design-build process since the company’s inception in 1997. No matter the size or complexity of the project, they do not deviate from their tried-and-tested process. Here is a detailed look at each phase and the reasons why each step is so important.
The entire process was created with a client-centered approach. Our team of accredited designers, architects, craftsmen, and project managers guide clients through each stage focusing on clarity and collaboration.
Phase 1: Discovery – Building the Project Foundation Together
The Hurst Discovery phase is vital to setting expectations for both the client and the team. We use this phase to learn as much as possible about the client, what is motivating them to remodel, and what outcomes they would like to see from their remodeling project.
-
Consultation Call: The Discovery process begins with a collaborative virtual or phone consultation with one of our project consultants. During this conversation, we talk with the client to really understand their goals, vision, and wish-list for the renovation. Together, we align the project with our client’s priorities to set the stage for success.
-
In-Home Consultation: A project consultant will meet with clients in their home, take time to evaluate the space, and then work with the client to align the project
with investment expectations. Whatever the client hopes to accomplish with their remodel—whether it's a small powder room, a whole house remodel, or a major addition—the Hurst Project Consultant can evaluate, in general terms, if the client’s investment range is realistic in relation to their goals. This is accomplished by touring the space with the client while discussing and evaluating their renovation goals.
The Discovery phase allows us to build a strong partnership by truly understanding the client’s home and their unique needs. We work closely with clients to establish the direction and priorities for the project, ensuring we’re fully aligned every step of the way.
Ahead of creating a project design, the Discovery phase includes vital information- gathering steps that lay the groundwork for a design that reflects each client’s unique lifestyle and needs. The Discovery phase is crucial to starting the project with realistic expectations through honest and detailed communication.
Phase 2: Design – Reinventing Home with Vision and Partnership
In our opinion, the real fun begins in the design phase, when dreams start to take shape. There are three separate phases within the Hurst Design phase: Concept, Development, and Detail.
In the Design phase, the Hurst design team works closely with clients to transform ideas into a refined, thoughtful design. The design team will walk clients through a series of questions that will help us understand a client’s design aesthetic, even if the client is unsure when they begin the project. There are so many choices out there for design details, clients appreciate our design team for their guidance while also keeping ‘build-ability’ in mind for every decision.
These conversations lead to a clear understanding of likes and dislikes, setting the designers up with the information they need to create a beautiful design that is unique to each client.
- Conceptual Design: In this step, a client’s vision begins to take shape through collaboration. We will create conceptual renderings and space plans to help clients visualize the possibilities for their renovation. Together, we refine ideas into a concept plan, define the scope of work, and develop a preliminary budget. Once everything is aligned, clients can move forward with clarity and confidence.
- Development Design: This phase is all about refining the details of each project. Our partnership continues as we develop the design further with architectural plans and engineering solutions to address every aspect of a renovation. By working closely with clients, we ensure the finalized design plan reflects their vision and meets their expectations.
- Detail Design: When a client’s project moves into the ‘Detail’ phase, things are really coming together. Our talented designers lead clients through the exciting process of selecting finishes that bring their vision to life. From cabinetry and countertops to flooring and tile patterns, we help clients make choices that reflect their style while ensuring every design element works beautifully together.
Through conceptual renderings, detailed planning, material selections, and finalized renderings, we bring a client’s vision to life. By the end of the Design phase, the client and their design team will have a comprehensive plan that ensures every detail is accounted for before construction begins.
Phase 3: Build – Crafting Excellence Through Collaboration
In the Build phase of the Hurst process, the hard work of a great design is turned over to our talented production team, where designs go from ideas, to tangible results. With construction underway, we continue to closely partner with each client to bring their vision to life. Our expert team works with precision, guided by a detailed schedule, regular updates, and ongoing quality assurance. Together, we ensure each project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of craftsmanship.
-
Pre-Construction Planning: Before construction begins, we work alongside our clients to meticulously prepare every detail. In this phase, we finalize the schedule, order materials, and confirm all plans. Regular communication during this phase keeps us fully aligned with clients to ensure they are informed every step of the way.
-
Skilled Craftsmanship: With construction underway, our skilled production team brings your vision to life. Each project is run by a dedicated project manager who acts as the client’s on-site partner, overseeing every detail, answering questions, and providing weekly updates to keep clients informed. Regular quality assurance checks maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and craftsmanship.
-
Completion Process: The final days of a client project are all about perfecting the details. Our team will test and fine-tune every element to ensure everything is operational and completed to the highest quality standards. During the final walkthrough, we address any final details and ensure each client’s complete satisfaction with the finished product.
