Tremont Modern Renovation
One of the many reasons the neighborhood of Tremont, Ohio is so desirable is its walkability. Our clients were drawn to the community because they wanted to live where they could walk to their favorite restaurants and bars, enjoy the incredible views, and be close to Downtown Cleveland.
Their home was in the ideal location, but it lacked the modern styling and open layout they desired. Additionally, the original layout of the home did not take advantage of the backyard views.
Before + After
We sat down to review the homeowner’s ‘pain points’ and wish list for the renovation. We learned that they wanted to completely update the home’s interior and exterior.
The original front facade was very old fashioned and featured an awkward roofline over a bay window. Finishes throughout the home were dated and did not align with the homeowners’ preferred design aesthetic. The home did not have good storage solutions near the entryways or in the primary bathroom.
The second floor bedrooms and bathroom were also very dated and the primary bedroom did not take advantage of the great backyard views.

Challenges + Solutions
Our Challenges
On the first floor, the location of the powder room was right in the center of the home, which limited the potential for a larger kitchen and open floor plan.
To reconfigure the floor plan to accommodate an open modern design we had to move ductwork and vents as well as plumbing stacks. The design also involved removing certain side windows that did not have great views. The window changes were vital to have the needed wall space for the new design layout.
Our Solutions
A major design decision was to relocate the powder room which was centrally located on the first floor. The new powder room location is now in an area near the stairs on an exterior wall. This change made room for a much larger kitchen featuring a large island with an open floor plan that spanned the length of the home.
We incorporated needed storage near the rear door, including lockers and room for coats along the wall. The new large island includes a sink and seating for many guests. A built-in, modern banquette area near the front of the home added another beautiful gathering space. The L shaped banquette is custom built with cabinetry storage beneath and a slatted accent wall was installed behind the backrest.
A custom coffee area was created between the stairs and the kitchen, which expanded the functional space of the kitchen. The coffee area features a pocket door, which can be closed off when not in use. Similarly a new wet bar was created between the kitchen and the family room which draws the crowd away from the kitchen for great entertaining flow.
To accomplish the clients’ goals for a clean modern appearance, all new finishes were installed throughout the home. For the exterior many innovative products were used in the design, including modern fiberglass windows and French sliding doors in black. Smooth Hardie Panel Accents were painted to match the new lap siding with a Frye Reglet metal reveal system in lieu of more traditional battens.
While maintaining the existing footprint of the front porch, we made dramatic updates by adding a metal shed-style roof and Black Grade Brick. The entire front facade was updated by squaring off the bay window which dramatically enhanced the look of the home and worked better with the existing gabled roof above the window.
A modern black fiberglass front door with frosted privacy glass and a plank-style steel garage door coordinate with the wood look siding.
The primary bedroom has a dramatic new look with the installation of a large French sliding door that leads to a second floor patio and highlights the amazing views of the backyard and downtown Cleveland.
The new design relocated the entrance to the primary closet to allow the bed to be centered on the wall and added a new coffee bar on the opposite wall – perfect for morning coffee on the patio.
The primary bathroom was reconfigured to include a new walk-in shower, a separate water closet, as well as a new modern vanity and a linen closet.
The Results
This Tremont remodel resulted in a jaw-dropping transformation. The home went from dated and unremarkable to a contemporary stunner. With thoughtful design throughout, the home now features high-end fixtures and finishes offering an attractive and well-appointed setting for day-to-day living and entertaining.
