Lakewood Historic Home Renovation

Home Additions & Whole House

About This Project

The Homeowner's Challenge

The homeowners wanted to completely reimagine the first floor of their historic Lakewood home while preserving the craftsmanship and character that made it so special. The existing floor plan felt closed off and no longer supported modern living, with a small, isolated kitchen and no first-floor primary suite. Their vision was to create an open, functional layout by relocating the kitchen, removing walls to connect it with the dining room, and adding a dedicated primary suite and guest bathroom. At the same time, they wanted to thoughtfully preserve original architectural details and incorporate a cherished dining room light fixture that had been passed down through their family.

Hurst's Approach

Hurst Design Build Remodel thoughtfully reconfigured the first floor to create a more open and functional home while honoring its historic character. The kitchen was relocated and opened to the dining room, creating a spacious gathering place filled with natural light and improved flow for everyday living and entertaining. A new first-floor primary suite and guest bathroom were seamlessly integrated into the home’s footprint, while structural improvements and updated mechanical systems modernized the home’s performance.

Throughout the renovation, preserving the home’s original craftsmanship remained a priority. Original interior doors and vintage door hardware were carefully restored and repurposed throughout the home. Custom trim profiles were milled to match the existing woodwork, allowing every new element to blend seamlessly with the home’s original architecture. The original fireplace was preserved as a focal point within the redesigned living space, and the homeowners’ treasured family dining room light fixture was incorporated into the finished design, adding a meaningful personal touch that connects the renovated home with their family’s story.
